For twenty years SEO meant one thing: earn a place among ten blue links. In 2026 that game has a sequel. People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude — and those systems answer by citing a handful of sources. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you become one of them.
Over 60% of Google searches now end without a click. The answer appears on the page or inside an AI assistant, and the user never visits a site. That sounds like bad news for traffic — but it reframes the goal. The new prize is the citation: being the brand an AI quotes, links, and recommends.
GEO vs. classic SEO
Classic SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm. GEO optimizes for a language model that reads, summarizes, and attributes. The fundamentals still matter — crawlability, structured data, fast pages — but the emphasis shifts toward content a model can extract, verify, and trust.
- Answer first. Lead each section with a direct, quotable answer in one or two sentences, then expand. Models lift clean, self-contained statements.
- Show real experience. Google's "E-E-A-T" now starts with Experience. First-hand data, original examples and named authors are what models prefer to cite.
- Be structured. Clear headings, lists, FAQs and Schema.org markup make your content machine-readable for LLM crawlers.
- Be consistent everywhere. Models build a picture of your brand from many sources. Aligned messaging across your site, profiles and press strengthens the signal.
If traditional SEO was about ranking, GEO is about being repeatable: saying something clear enough, and credible enough, that a machine is comfortable repeating it.
A practical checklist
- Open with the answer; put the nuance below it.
- Add original numbers, screenshots or first-hand results no one else has.
- Mark up articles, products and FAQs with structured data.
- Optimize for multiple engines, not just Google — ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot surface sources differently.
- Track citations and brand mentions, not only rankings and clicks.
GEO doesn't replace SEO — it extends it. The sites that win in 2026 are the ones a person and a model can both read, trust and quote.
